The Senior Citizens Real Estate Tax Deferral Program is a program
designed to allow senior citizens to defer payment of part or all of the property
taxes on their homes. This is administered by the McHenry County Treasurer.
Note: The filing deadline for the program is March 1 of the tax year.

The Homeowner Exemption also known as the Homestead Exemption. For
2007, the maximum exemption continues to be $5,000. For 2008, the
exemption increases to a maximum of $5,500, and for 2009 and forward, the
exemption will be $6,000. This exemption is automatic if the property is your
primary residence.
The Home Improvement Exemption applies to added improvements like
decks, patios, additions, etc. This will exempt the value of the addition for 4
years up to a maximum market value of $75,000.
The Senior Freeze is an exemption that freezes the assessed value of a
property. This is only for those who qualify. In 2008, the maximum household
income rose to $55,000. Adds language that the Chief County Assessment
Officer may audit any taxpayer claiming the exemption and a statement to that
fact must appear on the application. Also states that a taxpayer signing a
fraudulent application is committing perjury
as defined in the criminal code.
Our office does not grant this exemption, the application must be delivered to
the office of assessments located in the government center in Woodstock.
The Senior exemption will subtract $4,000 from the assessed value and is
available to homeowners who are or will turn 65 within the current calendar
year of 2011. There is an application for this exemption in our office and
online it is also available at the government center in Woodstock. There are
instructions here on how to fill out the form.
The Disabled Veterans Exemption Under this program, up to $70,000 of the
equalized assessed value of a home owned by a qualifying veteran, or the
veteran's spouse or unmarried surviving spouse is exempt from property taxes.
